Lusaka High court lifts injunction, Football Association of Zambia elections to proceed

The Lusaka High Court has discharged the interim injunction that had halted the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) elective Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was scheduled for Saturday in Livingstone.

This ruling allows the Andrew Kamanga-led FAZ to proceed with the elections as planned.

According to the discharge order granted by Judge Geoffrey Mulenga, the court was moved by the defendants- Kamanga, his General Secretary, Reuben Kamanga and the Sports Counsel of Zambia on a certificate of urgency and a viva-voce application to lift the interim injunction.

The court noted that an opportunity had been given to counsel for the plaintiff – Humphry Mwape Musonda, General Secretary of Damiano Academy Football Club, to present arguments regarding the motion but that counsel neither attended the proceedings nor provided a satisfactory excuse for their absence.

Upon hearing the defendants’ counsel on an ex-parte application for the discharge of the interim injunction, the court was satisfied that the injunction, initially granted on March 28, 2025, should be lifted.

Consequently, the court ordered that the injunction preventing FAZ from conducting its electoral process, including provincial elections and the elective AGM, be discharged with immediate effect. The ruling was dated March 29, 2025.

Previously, the High Court had issued an interim injunction restraining FAZ from proceeding with its scheduled elections. The injunction, granted on March 28, 2025, effectively halted the FAZ electoral process.

Musonda argued that FAZ’s leadership had overstayed its term and that the electoral process lacked transparency.

Meanwhile, FIFA’s Deputy Chief of Member Associations, Gelson Fernandez, expressed disappointment with the situation and stated that a report on the matter would be submitted in due course.
