The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has denied bail to two men accused of plotting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema through alleged witchcraft practices.

The suspects reportedly received K16,500 as an initial payment and were promised K2 million upon completing their mission.

Jasten Mabulesse Candude, a Mozambican national, and Leonard Phiri pleaded not guilty to charges of engaging in witchcraft to harm the President.

Appearing before Magistrate Fines Mayambu on Monday, the State opposed bail, citing allegations that the accused attempted to escape custody during investigations—a claim they denied.

The two face charges under the Witchcraft Act for professing knowledge of witchcraft and possession of charms.

Preliminary police investigations allege that Nelson Banda, the younger brother of former Petauke Central Constituency MP Emmanuel Jay Banda, hired the pair to harm the President.

The trial has been adjourned to February 18 to allow for the provision of a Chewa language interpreter for Candude.
