The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has reportedly intensified patrols to curb underage beer drinking and prevent illegal alcohol consumption by minors.
Chola Mwamba, the LCC Public Relations Manager, said the council was aware that some bars, nightclubs, and liquor retailers in Lusaka continue to flout laws prohibiting alcohol sales to individuals under the age of 18.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Mwamba warned that Council Police would heighten patrols during the festive season, a period marked by increased activities and rising cases of underage alcohol consumption.
“The Council advises business entities that only those with valid liquor licenses are authorized to sell liquor,” Mwamba said.
She cautioned that unlicensed beer outlets and those enabling underage drinking will face penalties, including fines or being charged to the Fast Track Court.
Mwamba further urged the public to support efforts against underage and irresponsible beer consumption, noting its negative impact on productivity and economic development.
“The Local Authority, through its Public Health Department, remains committed to enhancing public awareness on health-related matters affecting residents,” Mwamba assured.
