The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has secured the conviction of 23 vendors for illegal trading and improper waste disposal in the Central Business District (CBD).

The vendors were found guilty by the Fast Track Court on January 3, 2025, and fined between K100 and K500. Those unable to pay risk imprisonment or community service.

According to court records, Derick Moonga and 22 others were apprehended on January 2, 2025, for selling assorted items in a public area not designated for trade.

LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba stated that this violated provisions of the Local Government Act, Chapter 281 of the Laws of Zambia.

Some of the offenders were also convicted for indiscriminate waste disposal.

However, the court acquitted one accused individual after it was established that he was a mental patient.

“The Council has been actively working to restore order in the CBD, previously arresting 13 vendors for trading in undesignated areas,” Mwamba noted.

She emphasized the Council’s commitment to public health and safety, urging vendors to operate only in designated markets.

“The Council is sending a strong warning to traders engaging in illegal activities to desist from selling in undesignated places,” she said.
