The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has demolished makeshift stalls at Munyaule market, supposedly to enhance market infrastructure across the city and avert outbreaks of various diseases in future.

Despite the disappointment expressed by some traders in the area, the council informed that it had sent several advanced notices to the traders.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Public Relations Officer, Chola Mwamba, said the local authority instructed traders to vacate the premises because the contractor was ready to commence construction work on the site.

“Unfortunately, despite the Council’s clear instructions, the traders did not vacate the area, which violated the Urban and Regional Planning Act No. 3 of 2015,” Chola stated.

She added that the traders’s failure to comply to LCC’s instructions left the authority without a choice but to proceed with the demolition.

Chola asserted that the action was to ensure compliance with regulations and facilitating the much-needed modernization of the market.

“To pave the way for the construction of this modern structure,” Chola further said, “the Council took decisive action in the early hours of today by demolishing the makeshift stalls at Munyaule market,” she said.

Chola pointed out that the move was aimed at enhancing the market’s infrastructure and create a more efficient and appealing trading environment for vendors and shoppers alike.
