Lungu no match for President Hichilema in terms of leadership qualities —Kaisala

Charles Kaisala, the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) Chairperson for Energy, has described the leadership qualities of ex-president Edgar Lungu and President Hakainde Hichilema as starkly contrasting.

Kaisala said that Lungu cannot be compared to Hichilema, stating that the two were far apart in terms of leadership qualities.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Kaisala alleged that Lungu used State House to acquire riches, while Hichilema entered office declaring that he does not need a salary.

He also alleged that Lungu remained mired in impropriety, corruption and abuse of public resources, which has left the country economically weakened.

“In the case of Mr. Lungu, he enjoyed more than his salary, hence his boasting nowadays. It is easy to tell that President Hichilema is the beacon of the country as he is working very hard to restore stability in the economy,” Kaisala said.

He claimed that Zambians had not forgotten how the Patriotic Front (PF) government under Lungu terrorized people into near submission to his repressive regime.

Kaisala alleged that: “Lungu sponsored harassment and torture of innocent citizens, and this was the order of the day, while those close to the leadership were above the law.”

“PF cadres and their sponsoring leadership treated all other citizens as pariahs in their own country. Today, Mr. Lungu and his cronies are enjoying the democratic space and political tolerance under the leadership of President Hichilema,” he said.

Kaisala stated that it was unfortunate, however, that they were now abusing this space by allegedly promoting divisive language.

He said Lungu, at the height of his fraught leadership, ignored the suffering and deaths of the people instigated by his party and government operatives, showing no remorse or compassion for the families of the victims.

Kaisala assured that the New Dawn government was determined to implement its mandate given to them by the people of Zambia during the August 2021 general elections.

“The people have placed a high premium on the UPND and they are rightfully demanding sustainable development,” he said.

Kaisala boasted that the government had made tremendous progress in this regard and was still determined to meet citizens’ aspirations for better and dignified livelihoods.

He said the party understood why there was so much agitation in the Lungu camp, especially after Hichilema announced the planned investigations into the loans contracted under the PF administration to find out how the money was utilised

“This pronouncement does not sit very well with our colleagues because they know they could be culpable at the end of the investigations,” Kaisala said.
