The People Pact Movement (PPM) has endorsed former President Edgar Lungu as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections.
Movement Council of Presidents Chairperson, Peter Sinkamba, announced that Lungu was chosen due to his experience and current popularity as an opposition leader in the country.
Addressing a media briefing Melsim Lodge in Lusaka on Saturday, Sinkamba officially launched the Movement and revealed that after thorough analysis, it was agreed that Lungu was the right candidate to lead Zambia out of its current economic hardships.
Sinkamba expressed the People’s Pact’s deep concern with the state of governance and endorsed the findings and recommendations of United Nations experts.
“To reverse this trend, we are now called upon to execute the statutory mandate of our organization to fight the emerging culture of intolerance,” Sinkamba stated.
He criticized the deterioration in the economy, citing issues such as unprecedented load-shedding and the high cost of living, including expensive mealie meal and other essential commodities.
“Since January 2022, at least 26 such cases have been brought to the attention of the experts, with arrests, intimidation and harassment stemming from expressing diverging views or attempting to curtail political and public participation,” Sinkamba said.
He highlighted that these restrictions had a chilling effect on freedom of opinion, expression, association, and assembly, which are crucial for a functioning democracy and risk deepening societal divisions.
On the formation of the Pact, Sinkamba pledged the Movement’s commitment to fostering political cooperation and mutual respect across party lines.
“We will endeavor, to the best of our abilities, energies, and resources, to promote reconciliation among political parties and sustainable rapport within the framework of democratic governance,” he said.
