Luapula Province: Chief Munkanta calls for reversal of expulsion of nine Patriotic Front lawmakers

Chief Munkanta of the Chishinga people of Luapula Province has joined calls for the immediate reversal of the expulsion of nine Patriotic Front lawmakers.

The traditional leader described the decision by the Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly to declare the nine seats vacant as illegal and divisive.

In a statement issued in Kawambwa District on Friday, Chief Munkanta advised the government of President Hichilema to focus on ending power shortages and reducing the prohibitive cost of living instead of engaging in personal political battles.

“As the Chief of the Chishinga people of Kawambwa in Luapula province, we strongly reject the purported illegal expulsion of our two MPs here in Kawambwa, Nickson Chilangwa and Ronald Chitotela,” said Chief Munkanta.

He emphasized that the two lawmakers were given the mandate to serve the people until 2026, warning that “anything short of that may have consequences.”

The traditional leader advised the Hichilema government to approach its political battles with caution, as reckless decisions could plunge Zambia into chaos.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Moyo recently declared the nine PF seats vacant following the lawmakers’ expulsion from the party by the Miles Sampa-led PF faction.

On Friday, state police sealed off the Parliament building following reports that citizens would mount peaceful demonstrations against the expulsions.
