Lawyers urged to support implementation of policy framework for climate change initiatives

The government has urged legal professionals to play a pivotal role in implementing its policy framework to combat climate change.

Green Economy and Environment Minister, Mike Mposha, highlighted the government’s measures, including the national climate change policy, the national adaptation plan, nationally determined contributions, and the green growth strategy.

Mposha made these remarks in Lusaka on Tuesday during a courtesy visit from Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) President, Lungisani Zulu, and other council member.

“We are also at an advanced stage of establishing a legal framework through a climate change bill,” Mposha stated.

He added that the Ministry planned to introduce the bill to parliament once it receives cabinet approval.

“It’s my hope that when parliament reconvenes, we will have the opportunity to present the climate change bill, pending clearance from the cabinet,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, Zulu expressed the legal profession’s commitment to using the law as a tool to advance societal progress, particularly in addressing climate change.

“When we consider the challenges facing our country, it’s clear that climate is central to societal development,” he said.

He said the legal profession was determined to use the law to mitigate climate change challenges.

“We cannot fully address individual rights and liberties without considering the impact of climate on human intervention,” Zulu added.

He stressed that the legal profession should have a stronger voice and contribute more significantly to supporting government’s green initiatives.
