The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has expressed alarm over recent statements from some opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) that border on creating divisions along tribal and regional lines.
Lungisani Zulu, the Association president, said that inflammatory and divisive statements do little to help resolve challenges facing society; instead, they threaten national unity, peace and tranquility.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Zulu stated the importance of national unity, peace and tranquility for the country’s continued progress.
“We strongly condemn these unfortunate divisive statements which have the potential to pit citizens against each other,” he stated.
Zulu reiterated LAZ’s position that no cause or difference was worth sacrificing the sacred national unity.

He urged every citizen to remember that the country’s strength lies in its diversity and that the multiplicity of problems society faced can only be addressed by synergising the unique differences in opinions and skills.
“LAZ therefore calls on Members of Parliament and all political players to, in their deeds and speech, promote our national motto of ‘One Zambia, One Nation,'” Zulu advised.
He further called on lawmakers to uphold the constitutionally prescribed national principles and values of patriotism and national unity, even when there are differences in opinions.
