The government has reiterated its commitment to upholding democratic values, as evidenced by the political rally held by the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) on June 22, 2024, in Kitwe, organized by the Citizen’s First Party.

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, stated in Lusaka that the government had demonstrated its commitment by allowing opposition political parties to stage rallies without police interference.

Addressing a media briefing in Lusaka on Monday, Mwiimbu mentioned that past rallies failed due to unresolved technicalities between the opposition and the police.

“It is unfortunate that all the speakers at the Kitwe rally missed an opportunity to present solutions to the challenges that the country is facing,” he noted.

The minister urged the opposition to focus on nation-building rather than division, citing insults directed at President Hakainde Hichilema during the Kitwe rally.

“I also want to appeal to the churches to stop politicians from campaigning on the pulpit, as this contributes to tensions and divisions in the country,” he advised.

Additionally, Mwiimbu said the police were actively investigating the alleged abduction of Petauke Member of Parliament Emmanuel Jay Banda.

“The government will keep the nation informed about the findings in due course, and perpetrators will be brought to book,” he assured.
