Police in Kitwe have launched a manhunt for robbers who attacked a taxi driver and stole his vehicle, which was later found abandoned after an accident.
According to Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba, the incident occurred on February 14, 2025, between 22:00 and 23:00 hours in Chamboli Township, near Pecho Guest House.
The victim, Robert Mwaba, 47, was operating a Toyota Axio (registration AIE 4528), owned by his employer, Thomas Bwalya, when he was attacked by three unidentified men posing as customers.
Mweemba stated that Mwaba had picked up the suspects from Kitwe Main Taxi Rank for a trip to Chamboli Township.
Upon arrival near Pecho Guest House, the assailants suddenly attacked him with unknown objects, seized the car keys, and threw him out of the vehicle before speeding off.

“As he lay on the ground in pain, Mwaba shouted for help. He was later assisted by good Samaritans, who took him to his home for the night.
He reported the incident to Chamboli Police Post the following morning,” Mweemba said.
Following the report, police officers launched a search and later found the stolen vehicle abandoned within Chamboli Township. It is suspected that the robbers crashed the car before fleeing.
The vehicle was recovered with a damaged left ball joint, front fender, and a broken right side mirror. However, the scene had already been compromised by onlookers, who tampered with evidence before officers arrived.
The car has since been towed to the police station, while Mwaba, who sustained a swollen face, legs, hands, and painful ribs, was taken to Chamboli Level One Hospital for treatment.
Mweemba confirmed that a manhunt for the suspects was underway.
