Kitwe Mayor, Mpasa Mwaya, has called on elected leaders, particularly councillors and Ward Development Committees (WDCs), to empower communities with knowledge on sustainable water use and actively engage in conservation efforts.
Speaking during World Water Day commemorations on Friday, themed “Water Source Protection Amidst Climate Change,” Mwaya emphasized the need for local leaders to take the lead in protecting water resources.
“At the local level, councillors and WDCs play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable water use. They must lead by example and make the protection of water resources a priority,” she said.
She urged councillors, WDCs, and residents to take proactive steps in safeguarding water sources, stressing the importance of collective efforts.
“Councillors, you are the voice of the people in your communities. WDCs, you serve as the bridge between local government and citizens.
“Together, we must forge partnerships to spread awareness on water conservation and harvesting in every corner of our wards,” Mwaya said.
