Police in Kitwe are currently looking for a man for allegedly causing the death of the wife, aged 25.

The incident was reported to the police by the deceased’s father.

Copperbelt Police Chief, Peacewell Mweemba, said in a statement on Monday that this happened on Saturday July 15, 2023 at 23:30 hours.

The deceased, named Harriet Mwape Kayemba, of house number 798 Lungwa was allegedly murdered inside their bedroom by her husband, only identified as Junior Mweemba, of the same abode.

She leaves behind a three-year-old daughter.

An eyewitness said the deceased lived in an abusive marriage with her husband.

According to her the suspect reportedly came back home around 23 hours and was heard troubling his wife who was also heard daring him to burn her.

On Sunday, the following day, around 06 hours, the concerned tenant sent her daughter to check up on Harriet and was only informed that she was sleeping, and not talking.

She then entered the deceased’s bedroom with other neighbours and discovered her lying down unconscious.

The reason for the misunderstanding is not yet known.

Mweemba said police visited the scene and found the body of the deceased lying down unconscious on a mattress spread on the floor and covered in a duvet.

After uncovering and inspecting the body, it had dry burns on the left cheek, on the outer side of the left palm, right knee and on the right thigh most likely inflicted with a source of dry heat.

“Besides the mattress was a brazier and charcoal pressing iron which the culprit who is currently on the run is suspected to have used,” Mweemba said.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Kitwe Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem as police open a docket for the husband who is on the run.
