“We regret to report a second fatality involving Stephen Daka, aged 38, who was a dump truck driver for GRN Mining Contractor,” the statement read.

Daka tragically lost his life at the Chingola Open Pit (COP, F&D) operations at Nchanga mine around 13:00 hours on Monday, October 21, 2024.

His body was discovered by a mine investigation team a few metres from the dump truck he had been operating, under circumstances currently under investigation.

KCM management extended its deepest condolences to Daka’s family and announced immediate measures in response to the fatalities.

“In light of the two unfortunate incidents occurring in quick succession, KCM management has implemented stand downs at our operations in Chingola, Chililabombwe, Nampundwe, and Kitwe.

This included temporary shutdowns of certain mining and processing plant activities to allow for a comprehensive review of safety procedures and their application to prevent future accidents,” KCM stated.

The company added that it would conduct safety retraining sessions for all employees, emphasizing the duty of care expected during operations, with support from supervisors and management.

KCM reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of its employees and business partners, stating, “Our goal is for everyone to return home safely after each shift.”
