The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has temporarily shut down Surya Service Station, located on Mosi-O-Tunya Road in Woodlands, Lusaka, after selling fuel contaminated with water.
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, around 19:30 hours, affecting eight motorists whose vehicles reportedly malfunctioned after refueling.
ERB Acting Public Relations Manager, Musonda Chibulu, confirmed the development, stating: “The affected motorists have already sought compensation to repair their vehicles. We urge other motorists who purchased fuel from the station between 19:30 and 20:30 hours and experienced vehicle problems to come forward and seek redress.”
Chibulu explained that motorists could provide receipts as proof of purchase or rely on the station’s CCTV footage for verification.
“ERB, after verifying with the station, immediately instructed the station to halt selling fuel as investigations were reinstituted. The station will only be allowed to resume sales after the investigations are concluded and the product is certified to be compliant with Zambian standards,” he added.
The affected motorists have expressed frustration over the incident, and the ERB has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all fuel sold in Zambia meets quality standards.
