Francis Muchemwa, a jailed member of the Patriotic Front (PF), has submitted a renewed bail application to the High Court, seeking release as his appeal is heard.
Muchemwa, once a feared PF cadre known as ‘Commander Two,’ was convicted in July this year on multiple charges and is currently serving a three-year sentence.
The charges included possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime and obtaining pecuniary advantage by false pretenses.
He was sentenced to three years of hard labour on six counts and fined K141,000 on an additional charge.
Since his conviction, Muchemwa had remained in custody but now appealing the Lusaka Magistrates’ court ruling.
After his initial bail request was denied, he has now taken the matter to the High Court.

Through his legal representation from the Legal Aid Board, Muchemwa argued that there was a strong chance of his appeal succeeding.
He claimed the trial court made errors in both law and fact, especially concerning the documentary and circumstantial evidence presented in certain charges.
Muchemwa assured the court he was not a flight risk, citing his permanent residence in Kabwata and offering to provide credible Zambian sureties.
He also expressed willingness to comply with any conditions imposed should bail be granted.
