Ivanhoe Mines set to expand into Zambia, government says

Canadian mining giant, Ivanhoe Mines has expressed interest in extending its Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) operations into Zambia.

Zambia’s Mine and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe said  the Government would soon announce the new development.

“We will soon announce the expansion of the Kipushi mine by Ivanhoe Mines into Zambia, we have gotten all the assurances needed, this is very  big mine, we met in South Africa during the Mining Indaba, so more  announcements in collaboration  with them will be made,” Kabuswe said.

He said  in the capital, Lusaka on Thursday  when  South African high commissioner to Zambia  George Twala in company of Ivanhoe Mines executive vice president: Special Projects & Sustainability Patricia Makhesha paid a courtesy call on Kabuswe.

Makhesha said the mining giant was committed to providing skills development enterprise through  a robust supply development as well infrastructure development.

“We are committed to three components: skills development which we consider as an empowerment, supply development which we are calling enterprises which is critical as machines replace humans and lastly inclusive infrastructure development because we cannot operate without proper infrastructure,” she said.

Ivanhoe is focused on developing and expanding its four principal mining and exploration projects in Southern Africa.

The  mining  conglomerate  was developing  the Kamoa-Kakula copper mining complex in the DRC and  the Platreef palladium platinum-nickel-copper-gold discovery in South Africa.

Others are the extensive redevelopment and upgrading of the historic Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the DRC and exploration on the Western Foreland, near Kamoa-Kakula.
