In tears, ex-President Lungu’s family alleges victimization, accuses government of media trial

Former President Edgar Lungu’s family has described the past one year and half, from the time their father, the sixth Republican President, left office as the hardest time ever of their lives.

Daughter of former president Lungu, Tasila Mwansa, said lives for most members of the family had revolved around constantly being invited to the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA).

Tasila said this when she addressed Journalists at a media briefing in Lusaka on Tuesday at the former President’s residence in Ibex Hill area.

She said despite the family’s compliance to call outs, it seemed that it had become fashionable to demonize the Lungu family based on unfounded allegations.

“The dramatization of our circumstances by the state in the daily tabloids has only worked to demonize our father who worked diligently to serve this country and willingly handed over power to the incumbent,” Tasila said while breaking into tears.

She said the family was, however, not objectionable to the law enforcement
agencies making inquiries into any matter and that the family had constantly and consistently complied with the agencies.

Tasila said the state had not made it any easier for the family, as they seemed to play to the gallery in matters that relate to the Lungu family.

“Ordinarily, we would expect to be the first to know as relates to matters involving any member of our family, however, we have learnt of the recent lawsuits through news items published in tabloids and various social media platforms,” she said.

Tasila said the family had proceeded to engage lawyers to obtain the necessary documents from the state, which attempt had met with difficulties.

She said the family had finally obtained the necessary documents and would proceed to respond appropriately.

“We have had to spend considerable amount of time with our father and mother who, in all these difficult times, have opted to remain silent. Our father’s resolve is that we allow the law to take its course, and we agree with that position,” Tasila said

She said whereas some may call her father different names, he remains a caring father to his children and a loving husband to the mother.

“We wish to thank all that have reached out and empathized with us. Your encouragement has kept us going.
In conclusion, our request is that we may not be tried in the media but that we be given justice in court,” Tasila said.
