The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) Members of Parliament have written to Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, notifying her that their Mporokoso legislator, Brian Mundubile is and remains the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

The members also notified the speaker that Robert Chabinga who had announced himself as having taken over the position was only masquerading and impersonating.

In a letter signed by the PF lawmakers dated October 30, 2023, addressed to Mutti, the opposition lawmakers stated that the position of Leader of Opposition in Parliament was a constitutional and elective one and that Chabinga had not been elected by any of the lawmakers in the House and was therefore committing an illegality.

They said the position was reserved for the opposition political party with the largest number of seats in Parliament and that the PF had elected Mundubile as Leader of the Opposition in the House.

“The election of Mr Mundubile as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament was communicated to the Speaker (Mutti) at the start of the current Parliament.

“We write to expressly place on the Speaker on notice that this particular matter has not changed and no information to the contrary has been furnished by the Patriotic Front to the Office of the Speaker as no fresh election of the Leader of the Opposition has been conducted as required by law,” the lawmakers said in their letter.

The PF Members of Parliament have also accused the UPND, the Zambia Police Service, the Registrar of Societies, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security and the Judiciary of having connived with expelled Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa and Chabinga, the suspended Mafinga lawmaker.
