Copperbelt Police Chief, Peacewell Mweemba, says an illegal miner has reportedly died as others sustained injuries while scavenging for copper at a named copper dump.
“Brief facts of the matter are that on May 3,2024 around 10:00hrs, deceased was in the company of the two injured victims and other persons unknown were conducting illegal mining activities at OB 4 dump site when a pile of earth collapsed on them,” Mweemba said.
He noted in a media statement on Saturday that Peter Munkunka died on the spot while the other two injured victims were rescued by other friends.
They were quickly rushed to Nchanga North General Hospital for treatment.
The body of the deceased was picked and deposited at Nchanga General Hospital Mortuary.

The police visited the scene and confirmed the report and further visited the victims at Nchanga North General Hospital.
One victim was found discharged while the other one had been admitted in the hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Mweemba said the body of departed was inspected at the mortuary and no visible injuries were seen on him adding that police suspected he could have died of suffocation.
Inquiry file has opened by police.
