Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, has instructed the Department of Immigration to ensure that all newly gazetted border posts and internal offices become fully operational this year.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Senior Immigration Officers’ Annual Conference in Lusaka on Monday, Mwiimbu emphasized that the border posts at Lumi and Lonshi, as well as new internal offices in Chongwe, Kalumbila, and Maamba, must be functional to enhance service delivery and maintain internal security.

Mwiimbu assured the department of the government’s commitment to addressing challenges, including staff shortages and inadequate office space, to ensure effective operations.

He expressed gratitude for the recent acquisition of eight Land Cruiser vehicles to support the deployment of newly recruited border guards.

“I am happy to note that the contractor is now on site for the new immigration headquarters building, which is set to be completed by the end of this year,” Mwiimbu said.

Department of Immigration Director General Japhet Lishomwa highlighted significant progress through critical reforms, including the completion of a law review process that has resulted in the drafting of the Immigration Bill.

“The department has made strides in enhancing organizational performance through these reforms,” Lishomwa said, adding that the recent visa waivers for several countries had contributed to an increase in entries into Zambia.

The conference brought together senior immigration officers to assess progress, share experiences, and strategies on improving border management and internal security.
