The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has begun its annual institutional audit of the University of Zambia (UNZA), scheduled to run from December 2 to December 5, 2024.
Speaking at the opening of the audit on Monday at UNZA, HEA Director for Quality Assurance, Dr. Martin Mushumba, commended UNZA for its readiness ahead of the process. He emphasized the significance of the audit in setting a quality assurance benchmark for other higher education institutions (HEIs).
“Annual institutional audits are now a legal requirement, and the law mandates us to ensure their implementation,” Mushumba said.
He added that UNZA’s preparedness was evident from prior engagements with the institution’s leadership.

UNZA Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor, Boniface Namangala, underscored the university’s commitment to the audit process, describing it as a vital tool for enhancing institutional performance.
“Audits are crucial for quality assurance. We embrace them because they reveal areas for improvement, aligning with our motto: ‘Service and Excellence,’” Namangala stated.
He further elaborated on the role of institutional audits in evaluating policies, systems, strategies, and resources to ensure the effective management of teaching, learning, and public service.
HEA Director-General, Professor, Kazhila Chinsembu, had earlier announced in November that institutional audits for the Copperbelt University (CBU) and UNZA would take place in late 2024, as part of the Authority’s annual quality assurance mandate.
