President Hakainde Hichilema has pledged stricter measures to combat cybercrime and mobile money scams, warning that his administration will not relent in efforts to restore order in Zambia’s digital space.

Speaking during his address on the progress made in applying national values and principles at the Fourth Session of the 13th National Assembly on Friday, Hichilema expressed concern over the rising cases of online abuse, including cyberbullying, particularly targeting women and girls.

“In consultation with relevant stakeholders, we are creating a safer online environment by strengthening legislation on cybersecurity and cybercrimes,” Hichilema said.

“We will not relent in our effort to restore sanity in the digital space. It is for our own good, for our morality and ethics, and for the stability of our country,” he said.

The President also condemned the increasing sophistication of scammers using mobile money services, stating that the government was reinforcing measures to curb the abuse of digital platforms.

Beyond cybercrimes, Hichilema decried the rampant vandalism and theft of public property, describing it as a growing menace in communities.

He warned that the government is drafting legislation to introduce stiffer penalties for offenders.

“We urge citizens to refrain from and report acts of vandalism and theft of public and private assets to law enforcement agencies,” he said. “To the security wings, we are confident that you will remain vigilant in the fight against vandalism.”
