President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed sympathy to families displaced by floods following heavy rains, acknowledging the long-standing urban planning challenges that have worsened the situation.

During a visit to flood-affected areas in Lusaka on Tuesday, February 26, 2025, the president attributed the persistent flooding to decades of poor urban planning, stressing the need for decisive action.

He assured affected residents that the government was committed to resolving the issue, even if it required making bold decisions.

“We are committed to addressing this challenge even if it means making bold decisions,” he wrote on his Facebook page after the tour.

Hichilema vowed that Lusaka’s drainage system would be improved, warning that structures built on drainage routes would be removed, with affected individuals receiving compensation.

He also visited flood-hit areas in Kalundu, Chilanga District, and two Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps set up at Chitukuko Skills Training Center in George Compound and Chaisa Skills Training Center in Chaisa Compound of Mandevu Constituency.
