President Hakainde Hichilema has vowed to upgrade Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde airports to international standards to boost economic development in the regions.
Speaking during the Kwabuka Traditional Ceremony in Mansa on Sunday, he emphasized his vision to turn Luapula into an economic hub.
“We will transform Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde into international airports to help the region achieve significant economic growth.
For the first time, Mansa Airport will become an international facility,” said President Hichilema.
He added that the “Northern Corridor,” including Mansa, Kasama, Mbala, and Nakonde, would be revamped to create key infrastructure supporting economic activity.
President Hichilema urged Zambians to unite and support the government’s efforts to repair systems inherited in poor condition.

He assured the nation that significant transformation would be evident within a year under the UPND leadership.
Speaking at the same event, traditional leaders in Luapula Province appealed to the President to focus on regional development priorities, including the re-establishment of Mansa Batteries and the rehabilitation of deteriorating road networks.
Chief Nsamba, Vice Chairperson of the Luapula Council of Chiefs, praised initiatives like increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations and free education but stressed the urgency of improving infrastructure.
“We are grateful for the ongoing efforts, but we hope to see the revival of Mansa Batteries and critical road upgrades. Additionally, the vast water resources in Northern and Luapula provinces should be utilized for hydropower generation,” Chief Nsamba said.
He also highlighted the untapped potential of the Chambeshi River in Northern Province as a hydropower resource.
