Hichilema pledges increased funding for research, innovation to boost economy

President Hakainde Hichilema has pledged greater investments in research and development to enhance Zambia’s economic standing.

The President’s remarks came during the launch of the 2024 Technology Exposition at Copperbelt University (CBU) on Thursday, as he emphasized government’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting young innovators.

In a speech delivered by Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, Hichilema highlighted that the Ministry of Technology and Science was actively promoting innovation, which was crucial for creating a solid technology base in the country.

“We are now working on the Startup Bill and the Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which will provide a policy and legal framework to support the innovation ecosystem and promote entrepreneurship among our youth,” he stated.

Hichilema expressed his desire for Zambian youths to thrive and become successful entrepreneurs, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to invest in education.

James Wakiaga, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Zambia, acknowledged the significant contributions of various stakeholders in driving change in the technology sector.

He also commended the CBU Robotics Club for organizing the inaugural Technology Expo and partnering with Mukuba UniPod for the event.

CBU Chancellor, Imasiku Nyambe, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting research and innovation, stating that it aimed to work collaboratively with other partners to address the challenges facing the country.

The Expo and Innovation Challenge was held under the theme, “Home Grown Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable Zambia,” reflecting the government’s focus on developing local solutions to national issues.
