President, Hakainde Hichilema, has left for Mozambique in a two-day State visit at the invitation of his counterpart, President Filipe Jacinta Nyusi. Hichilema is expected to be back in Zambia on Thursday, this week.

This state visit is expected to further reinforce bilateral relations between Zambia and Mozambique while strengthening partnerships for development cooperation, says Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Stainley Kakubo.

“During the visit, President Hichilema and President Nyusi are scheduled to hold bilateral talks focusing on key issues aimed at enhancing trade, investment, and infrastructure development between the two countries, as well as issues related to peace and security within the SADC region,” Kakubo said in a statement on Tuesday.

Kakubo said other engagements lined up for the State visit included a tour of the Maputo Gas Power Plant and the Port of Beira as well as a Zambia-Mozambique Business Forum in Beira.

He pointed out that Mozambique remained a strategic partner for Zambia within the southern region as a key transport link through the seaport of Beira.

He indicated that Hichilema’s visit would, therefore, allow for the firming of the longstanding ties between the two countries and unlock the much-needed economic opportunities that would yield tangible benefits to the people of Zambia.

Kakubo said Hichilema remained firmly committed to cementing Zambia’s ties with its neighbours within the region, through increased bilateral and regional cooperation.

“The President has continued to emphasise the importance of increased collaboration through trade and investment and beneficial joint ventures at regional and continental levels in order to provide the necessary building blocks and opportunities that are crucial to ensuring improved livelihoods and integral economic transformation,” he said.
