President Hakainde Hichilema has officially inaugurated mining activities at the Sinomine Kitumba Mines in Mumbwa District, Central Province.
The new project, situated in Chief Kaindu, is set to significantly impact Zambia’s mining sector and economy.
The Sinomine Kitumba Mines is expected to process 4.5 million tonnes of raw ore annually and has been projected to yield approximately 50,000 tonnes of copper each year.
During the commissioning ceremony on Friday, President Hichilema announced that the project was expected to complete major construction and begin partial operations within 36 months.
“This mine will create 2,500 direct and indirect job opportunities, benefiting the people of Mumbwa and all Zambians,” Hichilema said.
The US$600 million investment would also support Zambia’s energy sector through the development of a 50 MW solar power plant, which would be integrated into the national grid.

“The investment will not only bring economic benefits but also contribute to the country’s energy sector,” he added.
Hichilema emphasized the need for local vigilance, stating, “The investment must be protected and guarded jealously, as it belongs to all citizens.”
He also expressed his gratitude to Sinomine Kitumba Minerals Company of China for their partnership.
“This project exemplifies the Zambia-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, showcasing the strong collaboration between our nations,” Hichilema noted.
