A torrential downpour in Chilabula, Luanshya, on Christmas Day wrecked havoc, destroying several structures, including the newly constructed St. Peter’s Catholic outstation church under the Sacred Heart Parish in Roan Constituency.

The rains, which struck on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, also damaged surrounding houses and blew the roof off a local community center.

Former Luanshya,Mayor Nathan Chanda, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday, appealing for support from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and other well-wishers to assist the affected community.

“As a concerned resident of Luanshya and Roan, I visited the Chilabula area with Father Nicholas Mubanga to sympathize with the residents. The heavy rains brought down the newly constructed St. Peter’s Catholic outstation church, causing considerable damage,” Chanda said.

He speculated that the storm’s intensity could be linked to Tropical Cyclone Chido, which has recently affected parts of the region.

“Our prayers and any available support will be offered to the community during this challenging time,” Chanda added.

Chanda urged authorities to expedite aid to the affected residents, emphasizing the urgent need for shelter and resources for those impacted by the storm.
