Health Minister, Elijah Muchima, has dissolved the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) board, citing non-compliance with Act No. 17 of 2024.

The law mandates a nine-member board, but the current board had 19 members.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Muchima said the board’s functions would cease until a new one was constituted in line with the law.

Meanwhile, the minister dismissed reports of an Ebola case in Chavuma, describing them as false rumours.

“It must be put on record that Zambia has not recorded any case of Ebola,” he stated.

On cholera, Muchima reported no new cases in the past 24 hours. The cumulative number of cases stands at 351, with 342 recoveries.

He further noted that no patients remained in cholera treatment centres and that Zambia had not recorded a cholera-related death in over 40 days.

However, the outbreak previously claimed nine lives. So far, 675,431 people have been vaccinated against cholera.

Regarding Mpox, the country recorded seven new cases in the past week—three in Copperbelt, two in Muchinga, and two in Lusaka.

The minister also confirmed Zambia’s first Mpox-related death, an eight-month-old baby who passed away at Chipata Level One Hospital in Lusaka.

Muchima reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector and effectively managing public health concerns.
