Gwembe constituency allocates K1.6 million for boreholes, irrigation schemes

The Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Committee has allocated K1.6 million towards the establishment of irrigation schemes and drilling of boreholes in the Gwembe constituency.

Gwembe CDF Chairperson, Harrison Milambo, stated that the irrigation system would include the installation of solar panels, tanks and the purchase of pipes to support the initiative.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Milambo added that, due to limited resources, priority for setting up irrigation schemes would be given to clubs, groups, cooperatives and registered companies with access to existing water points such as boreholes, dams, and those near the lake.

“The initiative is aimed at addressing the devastating hunger crisis affecting both the district and the country as a whole. This approach is intended to avoid the additional costs of drilling new boreholes, which could impact the implementation of the program,” he stated.

Milambo mentioned that K600,000 would be allocated for drilling boreholes in areas most affected by drought to reduce the distance people cover to access water for their daily activities.

“The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Gary Nkombo, directed all local authorities to ensure that 50 percent of both CDF loans and grants are allocated towards drought response measures,” he said.
