The Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has called for stronger disease surveillance and infection control measures to combat the rising cases of Mpox in the country.
MQHZ Director General, Dr. Quince Mwabu, expressed grave concerns over the increase in Mpox cases, warning that the trend posed a serious threat to public health.
In a statement issued on Monday in Lusaka, Mwabu stressed the importance of heightened vigilance by health authorities and the urgent need for collective action to address both Mpox and other outbreaks, such as cholera.
“The continuous rise in Mpox cases highlights the need for enhanced surveillance, improved infection control measures, and personal responsibility,” he said.
Mwabu urged the government and stakeholders to prioritize public awareness campaigns to educate individuals on preventive measures, emphasizing the importance of safe practices to reduce infection risks.

“We strongly advise avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms, practicing safe sex, and maintaining good hygiene, including regular handwashing and disinfecting surfaces. These steps are vital in reducing transmission,” he added.
He called for the immediate implementation of these measures within 14 days and a regular review of progress to ensure effectiveness.
Health Minister Elijah Muchima confirmed the increase in Mpox cases, with two additional cases recorded between January 10 and 13, 2025, bringing the total to six.
Mwabu emphasised that robust infection control in healthcare facilities was critical to preventing further transmission and urged citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting their communities.
