Prisons Care and Counselling Association (PRISCA) has urged the Judiciary to adopt noncustodial sentencing options, including suspended sentences, community service and fines, particularly for misdemeanor offenses.
Executive Director, Godfrey Malembeka, stated that these alternatives were essential for easing overcrowding in correctional facilities, which are currently operating under severe strain.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Saturday, Malembeka noted that the Judiciary’s limited use of noncustodial options had contributed to rising inmate numbers, urging a more balanced approach that incorporated community-based sentences.
Malembeka also called on the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to uphold its commitment to provide pro bono representation for one individual per year per private law firm.
He noted that effective implementation of this initiative could improve access to justice for underserved individuals across the country.
