The government has urged the Teaching Council of Zambia to ensure that teachers were equipped with the latest technological advancements to enhance the learning experience for pupils and students.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Permanent Secretary, Joe Kamoko, Education Minister, Douglas Siakalima, said providing teachers with essential technological skills and resources would support their professional growth and enable them to better prepare learners for future challenges.

Siakalima made these remarks in Lusaka on Tuesday during the launch of the Zambia Teacher Development Symposium under the theme, “Advancing Teacher Education: Bridging Policies, Technology, and Inclusion.”

“We must acknowledge the technological advancements that are reshaping the educational landscape,” he stated.

He added that the country must recognise the national Information Communication Technology (ICT) policy and Zambia’s Vision 2030, both of which underscored the importance of integrating technology into the education system to improve learning outcomes.

“The expansion of digital infrastructure in schools and the provision of ICT as a compulsory and examinable subject will necessitate ICT training for teachers, both at pre-service and in-service levels,” Siakalima mentioned.

He also called for efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure equitable access to technology for all learners and educators.

Siakalima highlighted the ‘Smart Zambia E-Government Programme’ as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to closing the digital divide.

“The ministry’s ICT education policy aims to integrate technology into teaching, ensuring educators are proficient and capable of leveraging these tools to improve learner outcomes,” he said.
