Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, has called on the National Designated Authority (NDA) to intensify efforts in mobilising funds to help Zambians address and adapt to climate change impacts.

During a visit to the NDA offices at the Ministry headquarters in Lusaka on Sunday, Mposha highlighted the need for clear, sustainable, and attractive projects to secure funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Adaptation Fund (AF) through single-country projects for maximum impact.

Mposha stated the importance of increasing support for small-scale farmers to help them cope with changing climatic conditions.

“Support for small-scale farmers enables them to significantly contribute to the country’s food security,” he said.

He noted that, with adequate irrigation equipment and support, small-scale farmers could cultivate a diverse range of crops, potentially including exports to neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Minister urged the NDA to address the challenges faced by small-scale farmers, especially during the current drought, to aid their adaptation to climate change.

He commended the NDA for its work under the SCRALA [Strengthening Climate Resilience of Agricultural Livelihoods in Agro-Ecological Regions I and II in Zambia] project, which had empowered communities with alternative livelihood ventures suitable for different seasons.

NDA National Coordinator, Billy Katontoka, assured Mposha of the NDA’s commitment to advancing the country’s development, particularly through engagement with the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund.

“The NDA will continue to effectively coordinate all climate change programming and financing in Zambia, ensuring alignment with the nation’s development priorities,” Katontoka said.
