The government is set to upgrade the nation’s transportation infrastructure to foster regional integration and boost trade, according to Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi.

Speaking at the Infrastructure Africa Conference in Cape Town, Milupi highlighted the construction and rehabilitation of roads, rail lines and aviation infrastructure through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The minister stated the significance of projects like the African Union’s trans-African highways in connecting the continent.

Improved infrastructure, he noted, could enhance trade flows and promote economic growth.

“Infrastructure Africa will connect industry stakeholders, foster dialogue, provide leading-edge information, promote investment and expansion, as well as facilitate business development around Africa’s growth and infrastructure needs,” Milupi stated.

He added that Africa has the potential to trade within itself due to a sufficient market and that Zambia’s geo-political location as a land-linked country offers opportunities for enhancing regional integration by developing alternative corridors to the sea and international markets.

During the conference’s official opening, South Africa’s Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, called for continental cooperation. Zambia’s Deputy High Commissioner Inonge Mwenya and Trust Hamaleka from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development also attended the event.
