The Zambian government has stated the importance of maintaining a strong social license to operate with local communities, particularly in mining regions like Maamba.
Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, stressed the need for mining companies to build trust, foster collaboration, and ensure mutual benefits with local communities.
Kabeta made these remarks during a courtesy call by Lieutenant Colonel Cyrus Minwala (Rtd.), Chief Executive Officer of Maamba Energy Limited, at his Lusaka office on Tuesday.

He pointed out that sustaining mining operations across Zambia hinges on fostering strong relationships with communities, emphasizing the necessity of prioritizing the well-being of local residents.
“Mining companies must prioritize the well-being of local communities to ensure long-term harmony and shared prosperity,” Kabeta said.
In response, Minwala reassured the Permanent Secretary that Maamba Energy remains committed to working with the community through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
He highlighted the company’s focus on ensuring its operations benefit led the people of Maamba, in alignment with the government’s vision of sustainable and inclusive development.
The meeting was also attended by Fred Banda, Director of Mines Development at the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development.
