The Zambian government claims it has uncovered a plan by opposition political parties to flood international platforms with fabricated complaints of human rights abuses in an attempt to tarnish the country’s image, Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has revealed.
Addressing the media on Monday in Mongu, Western Province, Mweetwa claimed the opposition was inciting young people, women, and other groups to send numerous emails to the international community, alleging rights violations by the UPND government.
He alleged that individuals had been recruited to pose as victims of human rights abuses.
“The scheme is not only dirty but has the potential to undermine the many successes the country has achieved in the last three years,” Mweetwa stated.
He reminded the Patriotic Front (PF), the main opposition party, of its own record during its time in power, accusing it of unprecedented human rights violations.
“A number of citizens lost their lives due to police brutality and political violence orchestrated by the former ruling party. The atrocities committed under their leadership have never been seen before in Zambia’s history,” he said.

Mweetwa challenged the PF to name any individual who had lost his or her life as a result of alleged human rights abuses under the current UPND administration.
He urged the international community to disregard the opposition’s claims, labeling them as baseless and unreflective of the reality on the ground.
“The PF must be the last ones to speak on human rights abuses, given their leadership’s track record of plundering national resources, corruption, and injustices against citizens,” Mweetwa said.
Mweetwa advised Zambians to be vigilant and avoid being misled by what he described as a “desperate and misguided” opposition attempt to tarnish the UPND government’s image.
He reiterated that the government remained committed to upholding human rights and dismissed the opposition’s efforts as a failed strategy aimed at misleading both citizens and the international community.
