The Zambian Government has signed 10 contracts worth over K166 million for the construction of new markets and the extension of bus stations across various districts.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Administration, Maambo Haamaundu, revealed that the total budget for the projects amounted to K166,295,439.67.
In Eastern Province, the infrastructure upgrades included the construction of Sinda Bus Station at a cost of K15,037,762.50, Chipata Bus Station at K42,627,398.50, Katete Bus Station at K21,702,338.78, and Lundazi Bus Station at K24,311,882.
“The Government will spend an estimated K6,354,947.08 for the completion of Namwala Modern Market in Namwala District,” Haamaundu stated.
Other projects included the rehabilitation of Nakambala Market in Mazabuka District, costing K8,736,554.64, and the completion of Mpika Bus Station in Mpika District at K24,862,985.43.

In addition, Chavuma Bus Station would be built at K8,106,600.00, Kasama Fire Station at K6,903,457.74, and Sesheke Transit Bus Station at K7,651,513.00.
Haamaundu confirmed that all contracts have been signed and construction would commence soon.
He stated that these developments would create a more conducive trading environment for marketeers and bus operators.
“The government is committed to modernizing markets and bus stations to improve conditions for traders and the general public,” Haamaundu said.
He noted that some of the projects were being funded with support from KfW, a German development bank.
