Govt set to publish constitutional roadmap —Mweetwa

Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, has announced that the Constitutional roadmap and proposed amendments will be made public this week by Minister of Justice Prince Kasune.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Tuesday, Mweetwa stated that the ongoing constitutional amendment process would not involve a Constitution Review Commission (CRC) to conduct nationwide consultations.

Instead, the government would facilitate limited amendments based on areas that have posed administrative challenges.

“The government will not impose constitutional amendments on Zambians but will ensure consensus is reached before any changes are made,” Mweetwa said.

He stated that Parliament, not the executive, holds the mandate to amend the Constitution under Article 79.

Mweetwa clarified that the process was not a repeal but a targeted amendment of specific clauses.

Addressing economic concerns, he linked the rising cost of living to the drought, which he said had created a water crisis affecting humans, livestock, and wildlife.

The minister also highlighted UPND government achievements in education, health, and agriculture.
