Govt set to commission Kafulafuta water supply project

The government has announced that the Kafulafuta Water Supply System Project on the Copperbelt Province has been completed and is scheduled for commissioning.

The project under the Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company would benefit over 1 million people in Ndola, Luanshya, Masaiti and Mpongwe Districts, according to Water Development and Sanitation Services Minister Collins Nzovu.

Nzovu told Parliament in Lusaka on Wednesday through a Ministerial statement, the status of Water Supply and Sanitation in the 11 commercial utilities across the country.

He said the Integrated Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project under Luapula and Chambeshi Water and Sanitation companies has also been completed and would be commissioned in December, 2024.

“This project is benefitting over 900, 000 people in Mpika, Kasama, Mbala, Nakonde in Northern and Muchinga Provinces and Mansa, Samfya, Mwense and Kawambwa in Luapula Province,” Nzovu said.

Additionally, the Ministry had engaged contractors to drill a total of 160 commercial Boreholes in drought prone Provinces of Lusaka, Central, Southern, Eastern and Western at a total cost of K75 million.

He stated that 100 of the boreholes would be utilised by the utility companies in the provinces for domestic water supply while 45 boreholes would be for livestock and 15 for wildlife.

The Minister told the House that contractors were currently on site in the five provinces and that works had commenced.

“The Ministry has also awarded six contracts for the construction of sanitation facilities in the selected public institutions in Cholera prone areas across the country at a cost of K36 million,” Nzovu said.

Meanwhile, Nzovu said the Ministry had been taking proactive measures to ensure that people continue to receive water supply and sanitation services.

He said a total of K55 million had been disbursed for the 11 water utilities to implement additional drought and cholera elimination interventions.
