Government has announced the procurement of 2,000 computers through the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA).

Technology and Science Minister, Felix Mutati, said this was in recognition of the pivotal role of technology in education.

Mutati in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, stated that the computers would be distributed equitably, with each province receiving 200 units.

“The primary beneficiaries will be secondary schools and Technical Vocational Education Training (TEVET) institutions across the nation,” he said.

Mutati revealed that his Ministry was working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education regarding the endeavour.

“This endeavour is a resounding endorsement of our commitment to enhancing the quality of education and fostering a digitally literate future generation,” he stressed.

The Minister said the computers would come pre-loaded with educational software, ensuring that they serve as comprehensive learning tools for students and educators alike.

Meanwhile, Mutati stated that a collaborative effort between the government and the private sector had successfully extended fibre connectivity to seven of the eight neighbouring countries excluding Mozambique.

He added that this was as a result of the tax incentives and concessions introduced this year to boost digital infrastructure.

“The ongoing initiative to link Mozambique to the fibre network is well underway, with completion scheduled before June 2024,” the Minister announced.

He said this strategic move not only underscores Zambia’s position as the digital hub of Southern Africa but also solidifies its standing as the most connected country in Africa through fibre networks.

Mutati noted that as a direct outcome, substantial investments had flowed into the establishment of a state-of-the-art tier 3 data centre and innovation hub.

“This will be situated in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone, the commencement of construction is slated for the coming year,” he stated.

Mutati said this significant development marks a pivotal step towards reinforcing Zambia’s digital infrastructure and fostering innovation in the region.
