The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services has reaffirmed its commitment to scaling up the digitization of the Social Cash Transfer (SCT) program across more districts in Zambia.
Permanent Secretary Angela Kawandami emphasized that transitioning to electronic payments was
a vital step toward building a more inclusive, efficient, and accountable social protection system.
“This transition to digital payments will allow recipients to receive their payments securely and conveniently, directly to their mobile phones or bank wallets, while also increasing mobile money business opportunities for local people,” Kawandami said in a statement issued on Monday in Lusaka.
She noted that this shift will eliminate the need for beneficiaries to travel long distances to access payment points, which often poses challenges related to time, cost, and accessibility.
Mporokoso district has reportedly achieved 100 percent digital payments for its 5,964 SCT beneficiaries, aligning with President Hakainde Hichilema’s digitization agenda and efforts to modernize public service delivery.
Kawandami expressed delight at the milestone, describing it as a significant step toward enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability in the delivery of social services.
She further encouraged other districts to adopt the digitization model to create a holistic and modernized approach to the social protection sector.
