The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating harmful practices and advancing gender equality as part of efforts to promote holistic human development.

Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary, Angela Kawandami, emphasized the need to address deeply rooted practices that hinder sustained progress toward gender equality.

Speaking as a panelist at the African Union (AU) high-level side event during the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York, Kawandami highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination among Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to enhance data collection and monitoring.

“There is a need to enhance coordination among CSOs that generate grassroots programme data, using unified tools as a stopgap measure for tracking progress,” she said in a statement in Lusaka on Friday.

Kawandami also underscored the significance of the AU’s Accountability Framework, which provided a structured mechanism for ensuring Member States uphold commitments to continental goals, particularly those outlined in Agenda 2063.

“The framework establishes processes for monitoring, reporting, and reviewing progress toward shared objectives, including inclusive growth, governance, peace, and regional integration.

“It also ensures transparency and collective responsibility, requiring countries to align national policies with AU priorities,” she explained.
