Government says it has noted the allegations by Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Emmanuel Mwamba, over claims that he was brutalized by police during his arrest.
Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Kennedy Kalunga, said the nation would recall that on June 17, 2023 Police charged and arrested Mr. Mwamba on two counts of forgery contrary to Section 342 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia and three counts of publication of information contrary to Section 54 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act No. 2 of 2021.
Kalunga in a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday emphasized that law enforcement agencies in the country operate with the utmost professionalism and integrity.
He said law enforcement agencies were guided by a comprehensive set of protocols that ensure the fair treatment of all individuals in custody and that any allegations of misconduct are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken if any wrongdoing was found.
Kalunga said government firmly believed in upholding the rights of every citizen, regardless of their political affiliation.
“Government notes that Mr. Mwamba has reported the matter to the Police Complaints Commission, which has the authority to investigate any allegations of misconduct or brutality involving law enforcement officers,” he said.
Kalunga said government respects this process and eagerly awaits their report, which will shed light on the details of the arrest and any potential misconduct, ensuring a fair and impartial assessment of the situation.
“In the meantime, it is essential that the public refrain from jumping to conclusions or spreading unfounded rumours and be patient while investigations on the matter are going on,” he said.
