Govt orders contractor to redo newly constructed bridge in Gwembe District

Government has threatened to demolish newly constructed bridges that will fail to meet the minimum standards required for the construction of crossing points in Gwembe District of Southern Province.

Gwembe Town Council Secretary, Maliwa Muchuu, said this when he inspected the ongoing construction of nine crossing points funded by the rural development fund component under the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

He said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development last year released K5 million for the rehabilitation and construction of crossing points that were damaged due to heavy rains in Gwembe District.

Muchuu expressed disappointment that one contractor had used smaller steel bars (Y-12 instead of Y-16) during the ongoing construction of crossing points.

“I want you to straight away remove these Y-12s, I don’t want to find them the next time I come. I will make sure that i pass through here very soon so that I check if you have complied with my directive. If I discover that you have not removed these steel bars, we will demolish this structure and you will be the one to lose”, he warned.

Muchuu said the desire of government is to construct infrastructure that will stand a test of time and improve people’s lives.

” As a local authority, we have a duty to give our people quality structures that will last the test of time. We don’t want to be called after one month of rains that the bridge has collapsed again, that would be a serious waste of resources.” he said.

The named contractors working on the bridges are optimistic that they will be able to complete the works on the nine bridges within the agreed period of time.
