The Zambian government has launched the 2024/2025 rainfed Food Security Pack distribution programme in Chienge District, Luapula Province, aiming to benefit 1,375 farmers.

The initiative, which was flagged off at Lambe Primary School on Thursday, is part of government’s ongoing efforts to empower vulnerable farming households by providing agricultural inputs and livelihood skills.

The goal is to improve productivity, enhance food security, and boost nutrition and income for self-sustainability and poverty reduction.

At the event, Chienge District Commissioner, Favourite Musangu emphasized the importance of farmers using the inputs responsibly, warning against the temptation to sell the fertilizer and seeds.

She stressed the need for beneficiaries to align with President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to nationwide development, which includes enhancing agricultural productivity across the country.

Over 100 farmers received agricultural packages, each consisting of two 50kg bags of urea fertilizer and 10kg of white maize seed, marking a significant step in improving the livelihoods of local farmers.

District Community Development Officer, Nshinka Chanda, highlighted the importance of farmers repaying the district with profits earned from the programme, ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

Meanwhile, Council Chairperson Francis Mwanto commended government’s efforts, calling the programme a true reflection of the “new dawn government” and its commitment to improving the lives of farmers in the district.
