The government has introduced 50 postgraduate scholarships for Zambians to study renewable energy and climate change, aiming to enhance the country’s response to climate challenges.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Technology and Science, Brilliant Habeenzu, announced that the scholarships were intended to develop specialists to diversify energy sources and strengthen Zambia’s response to the ongoing energy crisis.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Habeenzu explained that the 2024/2025 Science and Technology Postgraduate Scholarships were available in fields such as Mining, Agriculture, Health, Tourism, Renewable Energy, Climate Change and Manufacturing, all aligned with the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).

“The scholarships will focus on research areas that have the potential to generate innovative products and services that can improve the livelihoods of Zambians and drive socio-economic development,” said Habeenzu.

He also highlighted that 60 percent of the scholarships were reserved for female applicants, with the remaining 40 percent allocated to male applicants.

“I encourage women to apply in large numbers, as the government has deliberately given you an advantage,” he added.

Successful applicants will pursue their studies at public universities in Zambia, according to the statement.
