Govt denies US report on human rights abuses, says Hichilema’s administration pro-democracy

Government has rubbished the recent Zambia 2022 Human Rights Reports produced by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour in which it highlights human rights abuses in 2022 under the United Party for National Development (UPND) administration.

According to the report, the New Dawn Administration has restricted freedom of speech and has shown high sensitivity to criticism by the opposition and individuals.

Acting Information and Media Minister, Makozo Chikote, said Zambia remained committed to the promotion and protection of human rights, as enshrined in the Constitution, and in line with international obligations.

Chikote in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday said over the past year, significant strides have been made to enhance human rights, strengthen democratic institutions, and foster an environment conducive to the well being and dignity of the citizens.

The acting Chief Government Spokesperson said it is important to note that the Report’s findings do not fully reflect the remarkable progress achieved by the New Dawn administration in advancing human rights.

“Government has taken concrete steps to create an inclusive and accountable society, where every citizen is treated fairly and with respect. Zambia has made significant strides in creating an enabling environment for human rights defenders, civil society organisations, and the media to operate freely,” Chikote said.

Regarding the allegations on restricted freedom of speech and limited criticism towards opposition political party members, he said government strongly refutes these claims which are unfounded and do not accurately reflect the reality of the current political climate in our country.

Chikote said contrary to the allegations made, government has shown great respect for the principles of democracy and the rights of political opposition figures.

He said government firmly believes in a strong and inclusive democratic system that allows for a multiparty political environment, enabling healthy debates and constructive criticism.

“Further, Government has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of freedom of expression and encouraging open dialogue.
The diversity of opinions and vibrant political discourse within the country exemplify the existence of a robust democratic society that values constructive criticism as a catalyst for progress,” Chikote said.
